It’s Not Too Late To Change – Internet Sales Still Only Account For 4% Of Total Retail Sales.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andy Vining @ 4:08 am

BluRoute have uncovered some interesting snippets - which highlight why the use of online advertising is an essential tool for retailers: whether or not they are Internet/E-commerce enabled.

According to the British Retail Consortium:

  • Eleven per cent of all businesses in the UK are categorised under the Retail sector.

  • Retail sales in the UK last year amounted to nearly £250 billion – more than the combined economies of Switzerland and Ireland together.

  • The Retail Sector alone generates nearly six per cent of the UK’s entire Gross Domestic product figure annually.

  • One-third of consumer spending still passes directly through shops and, even with the growth in Internet sales, retail sales over the Internet still accounts for less than four per cent of total retail sales.

  • The Retail Sector employed nearly three million people alone as of September 2005 – some eleven per cent of the entire UK workforce, with a growth of some 300,000 employees over the last five years.

So, although there are many reports, surveys and statistics indicating the slump of retail’s predominance in the UK, it should be noted that, with only four per cent of retail sales being concluded online, it is far too early for traditional retailers to concede in the battle between ‘bricks & mortar’ sales and ‘online’ sales.

What should be noted, however, are the changing ways in which consumers source their products and services. Those retailers who are not yet Internet-literate need to wise up quickly, as there are an ever-increasing number of consumers who automatically look to the Internet in their search for new products and services.

Let them use the Internet to identify what they want – but be prepared to capitalise on their decision once it has been made.

BluRoute are happy to see the increasing use of the Internet as it brings huge degrees of freedom and choice to the consumer, but we contend that Retailers can and should use the Internet as a tool to drive consumers to their stores.

Not all sales have to be concluded over the Internet. Bricks and mortar retailers have the huge advantage over Internet retailers of providing a human point of contact, a higher degree of service, and therefore, a higher degree of customer satisfaction.

We can help to drive business to your door by using online techniques to drive offline sales. We can do this – now!

Our unique, no-risk, low-cost online advertising service is the answer.

Is Apathy Stifling Retail Progress?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andy Vining @ 11:07 am

Last year was particularly challenging for many UK retailers with a steady stream of poor performances being reported in the City from some of the top names in the sector.

So, what is the problem?

You may be shocked to read that, according to a recent comparative survey by Broadreach Limited, into the Home Departments of various stores such as Marks & Spencer, Argos, Debenhams. Next, House of Fraser and Tesco - all were generally identified to be suffering from widespread apathy, poor employee confidence and product performance, and dropping service standards.

Is this the real problem? People have disposable income so why are Retailers failing? Is it down to one single issue – apathy?

Consider this: Is apathy stifling your growth? Do you feel that spending hard-earned cash on traditional advertising methods is really not worth the high-cost and high-risk?

Why not consider a no risk, highly cost-effective online advertising campaign as an alternative route to generate inquiries and footfall?

Try it now! www.bluroute.co.uk: A powerful online advertising service designed to drive receptive customers to you, backed by a solid guarantee: No Sale, No Fee!

Our online advertising is proving itself to be of added value to smaller and larger retailers alike, and works equally well for campaigns on local, regional or national level: the small amount of effort required from you is easily offset by our powerful, compelling proposition – a proposition which totally re-invents advertising for you!

We’re enthusiastic not apathetic – work with us and see some of that enthusiasm working with you and for you.

To put things into even clearer perspective: the assessors conducting the above survey concluded: the apathy levels were such, that none of the stores were recommended as positive places to visit.

40 stores were visited during the entire UK survey – is that not a self-damning prophecy: a clear example of failure through apathy in itself.

Take action and stop the rot! Our online advertising could make all the difference, and during 2006 could make significant wins for you.

Our question to you: Why Wouldn’t You?

Just imagine - Retail Sales of $800billion dollars

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andy Vining @ 2:14 pm

A recent story in the China Daily may not seem directly relevant to British businesses, but it outlines the impact that pro-actively driving consumer demand can have on retail sales: Chinese retail sales are currently growing by some 13% year on year – partially driven by government sponsored initiatives, and last reported to be a massive $800billion dollars.

All this in a country where local retail consumption accounts for just 33% of GDP and where income tax thresholds have been recently been raised from a meagre $99 to $197; where internet penetration still stands at a mere 1.3% (that’s still some 169m users!) – however this is forecast to double every six months.  Now here’s the scary part; it is reported, by the e-Commerce times that, in America, some 75% of all internet-connected Chinese actively buy on-line - albeit this percentage drops to 36% in Taiwan and 32% in mainland China

A substantial percentage by anyone’s reckoning. Further research, by NUA Internet Surveys, has revealed that mainland Chinese respondents consider “on-line shopping to be more fun than traditional shopping.”  With some 1.3 billion people in China and the internet penetration forecast to double every six months this trend cannot fail to have a major impact on world wide adoption, and usage of the internet as a shopping medium.

Add to this the fact that the Chinese government is proactively stimulating consumer demand by giving Chinese consumers an increased ability to spend (lower taxation etc).  Zhuang Jian, a senior economist with the Asian Development Bank’s Resident Mission in China, added: “With less financial burden, people will become willing to spend more.” As economies in Asia develop and grow, this opens up both threats and opportunities for business across the world.

What does it mean for your business? If you have international aspirations your business will need to be visible to gain market share and visible online.  However, even if your aspirations remain focused on your own locality, you will need to be very aware of the momentum towards on-line trading that will be generated by Asian online (keyword) activities.

E-commerce facilities, online advertising, search engine friendly web presence, and the ability for local, regional, national and international customers to find you, easily, see your proposition, and then to buy from you in a simple, straightforward and secure way - are becoming prime requisites.

The BluRoute service can help you to achieve all of these things and much more: we also offer a results-based guarantee: No Results, No Fee. Simple!

Our question to you: Why Wouldn’t You?

What Is Your Advertising Doing To Increase Customer Volumes?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andy Vining @ 4:50 am

With prices falling, it is crucially important to increase the volume of customers to your store. Advertising needs to be more increasingly effective – from both a cost perspective and as a basis of return on investment.

The BRC Shop Price Index (SPI) inflation rate for January showed that prices were more than half a percentage lower than the same period last year.

According to the BRC, despite a recovery in December 2005, food prices were lower in January than 12 months ago. Non-food items have fallen in price for the 8th consecutive month and have also fallen in price year-on-year: How is this affecting your business?

A gloomy start to 2006 saw total sales grow by just over two per cent in January – the weakest levels since March 2000. After the traditional retail boom around the December Sales, consumers appear to have tightened their spending – to pre-November 2005 levels.

Most of January’s decline in sales growth has come from non-food sales, which fell by more than a whole percentage point. Clothing and footwear have been notably hit, and if your business is in these sectors, take note – you need to make plans for the future now!

How can advertising help? After all, traditional advertising may deliver inconsistent results, and usually bears a significant upfront cost. Risk-laden.

As more and more UK consumers are harnessing the power of the Internet to make buying decisions, it makes perfect sense for you to look to effective online advertising as a means to driving your sales.

The BluRoute service can help no matter whether you are web-enabled or can handle e-commerce based transactions: our unique online advertising service allows consumers to browse a virtual shop window and when they see an item they want – download a store redeemable voucher – effectively driving footfall to you. It also comes with a peace of mind guarantee: No Results, No Fee. It is in our interests for you to secure inquiries – if you don’t, we lose revenue too!
Our final question to you: Why Wouldn’t You?

Is Your Business Ready For The Online UK Retail Up-Swing? And if not, why not?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andy Vining @ 5:39 am

There are indications of the start of a new upswing in the fortunes of the Retail economy: leading to indications that forecast an increase in consumer confidence creating an increase in consumer spending – no mater whether that spending is offline or online.

A report published by accountancy firm BDO Stoy Hayward suggests that this recovery is being stimulated by a combination of the cooling of oil prices and an improved stability in the housing market in the UK BDO’s latest Business Trends Report predicts that GDP will rise by two per cent in the first quarter of 2006, and then up to three per cent during the second quarter of this year.  This will affect your business –are you ready? According to the report, this will lead to stronger economic growth this year, and that means more consumers spending more cash in your stores!  How will you capitalise on this projected growth? For example, ask yourself:

How are you attracting consumers to your store?  Is traditional marketing working for you? Are you capitalising on the growth of Internet as a means for consumers to source your products?  Are you stuck without a web presence? Does your web presence help or hinder sales in your retail outlet?

The Internet is becoming increasingly important to the consumer in making their buying decisions. Is your business embracing the Internet as a tool to win business?  Maybe, you are not sure where to start to gain competitive advantage?  The power of the BluRoute service is that we give you guaranteed wins: No Results, No Fee. Our online advertising service is both cost-effective and powerful – and it works well whether or not you are e-enabled, whether or not you have a web presence.  It is a service which uses the Internet to drive customers to your store, from where you can use the skills of your sales staff to cross-sell and up-sell.Even if you thought online advertising was a great part of your marketing mix for 2006 but you couldn’t allocate budget – we can help!

You only pay us when you get results: when you get increased footfall and sales. Simple.  We help you target customers, bringing them to you – effectively ensuring that you are ready to take full commercial advantage of the forecast economic upswing – all without exposing you to the inherent costs and risks of traditional advertising methods.

Our final question to you: Why Wouldn’t You?

Saving Time And Money With The Media – Why Internet Advertising Makes So Much Sense For Your Business: This Year, Today, NOW!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andy Vining @ 10:22 am

The Internet has become as much a part of the daily fabric of our lives as television, according to independent research statistics.

A report published by BMRB Internet Monitor in January highlighted that the Internet is the second most-commonly used medium after TV in the UK today.

Furthermore, the research showed that on average, British households spend a quarter of their weekly ‘media time’ on the Internet, clearly illustrating just how significant online advertising is becoming for businesses looking to increase their visibility, awareness and grow routes to market cost-effectively online  – is your business embracing the Internet too?

To add to these figures, another report published by OfCom last year showed that users are now spending one fifth of their ‘media time’ using the Internet.

All this means that they are spending more hours surfing the Web than they do reading traditional advertising mediums, such as newspapers and magazines combined: what an incredible opportunity for businesses that utilise online advertising as a part of their marketing mix!

At BluRoute, we help companies to establish an effective and powerful online advertising presence, an online presence which drives offline consumer activity; an online presence - which is underpinned by a simple and compelling guarantee: No results, No Fee.

Broadband Is The Dominant Medium – Are You Embracing It In Your Push For Increased Sales?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andy Vining @ 8:46 pm

The exponential growth of Broadband across the UK has been incredible to observe in recent months – this powerful tool is being accessed by more and more British households, businesses: buyers of your services and products.

According to the Office of National Statistics in their September 2005 report, the UK broadband market increased by an amazing 70 per cent between July 2004 and July 2005. Some 99 per cent of all home in the UK are now connected to broadband-enabled exchanges, with 54 per cent of all internet connections now being accomplished via broadband.

The internet is having a fundamental influence on the way British buyers buy – are you embracing this shift in your business’ marketing activities? Are you attracting customers - using online methods: are you attracting them in a powerful, compelling and cost-effective way?

If not – why not?

Can you afford to let your competitors dominate and steal potential buyers from under your nose? And…not having a website or an e-commerce powered online store is not an excuse!

Lessons are usually taken from the ‘States, and recent report findings by NetRatings highlighted that nearly 70 per cent of retail purchases online were conducted via a broadband connection. This underpins the importance of broadband.

It is clear, according to another report by MetaPack in a survey titled ‘Can Retailers Deliver’ that there is a strong correlation between broadband penetration and online spending: it has happened in America, and is now replicating here in the UK – are you grabbing these new opportunities?

BluRoute, an online service which bridges the gap between offline and online retailing, offers a cost-effective way to drive self-qualified leads, and business into your store, and our proposition is simple: No Results, No Fee.

With BluRoute, it doesn’t matter whether you have an e-commerce activity or not – we use sophisticated online marketing methods to drive customers to your store. And the growth of broadband is great news for BluRoute – as it allows us to deliver a sophisticated service in a really user-friendly way.

We can show you how to successfully harness the broadband boom and drive more business into your business – before your competitors seize it!

Our final question to you, knowing that there is a powerful guarantee in place from BluRoute is this: if there is no financial risk, Why Wouldn’t You?

Major Player, Minor Market – Local Focused Sales

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andy Vining @ 8:45 pm

The power of the Internet may be having an increasingly significant impact on our lives, but despite our Society’s global focus, we still live at a localised level – at least, according The Newspaper Society.

According to their report, most purchases are made within a limited area – for example, the figures highlight that 58 per cent of all clothes shopping takes place within five miles of the consumers’ home, with only 20 per cent of the same purchases made more than 10 miles away.

According to the Society, this trend translates across consumer sectors: 57 per cent of all adults shop for groceries within two miles of their home, whilst 52 per cent buy furniture and carpets within five miles of place of residence.

Furthermore, those questioned across the UK travel up to seven miles to buy electrical goods, whilst 41 per cent of DIY shopping occurs within a two-mile home radius.

What is the main message here, and how is it relevant to cost-effective online advertising, you ask?

It is increasingly clear that no matter whether you are a large multinational or a small localised trader, your market is established according to where your customers live.

Your marketing messages need to be targeted regionally – indeed, even locally – to meet the local shopping requirements of your consumers.

The report goes further, stating: ‘This attachment to the local area allows advertisers to develop long-term relationships by communicating locally’.

Our powerful and cost-effective online advertising service can help you to hit your target markets in a truly unique way – and BluRoute offer the additional peace of mind of a simple guarantee: no results, no fee.

Our question to you is: Why Wouldn’t You? BluRoute works harder for you!

Where The Action Is – The Online Market!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andy Vining @ 8:44 pm

The power of the Internet is making more of an impact than ever before on the current and future prosperity of high street retailers across the UK – whether they choose, or not, to acknowledge the fact. And many choose not to.

But why, when the vast majority of research is stacked overwhelmingly in favour of getting online to secure business, win better business, and see footfall increase significantly in high street stores. Where does resistance arise in the minds of UK high street retailers? Do you advertise online?

Maybe it is a perceived difficulty between bridging the gap between bricks and mortar (the retail unit on the high street) and the online presence (our services help) – and there exists a noticeable gap for many retailers here, a gap which can and should be bridged by online advertising.

And it costs them sales, daily.

Research from The Interactive Media In Retail Group (IMRG) estimates that 24 million people spent £1.6 billion online last September – less than six months ago. Each customer spending an average of £67 – more importantly this figure was, according to the IMRG, double the figure at the start of 2005.

IMRG have predicted that by 2010, online shopping will be worth nearly £60 billion per annum in the UK, representing almost 20 per cent of ALL retail. The IMRG has also highlighted that 36 million Britons will shop online by 2010.

Can you afford not to include online advertising and promotion in your future push for customers? Can you see how this will influence footfall? There is an element here of ‘online footfall’, in that it is essential to attract customers to come to your online presence (where you have one – and with our service, you get an online impact without the need for a website) and your physical store. Both equal sales!

There is an increasing need – and an incredible amount of research, which we have – to highlight that high street retailers in the UK need to embrace online business to stabilise and grow their retails units. And we can help.

Our systems deliver a straightforward guarantee: No Results, No Fee. Our cost-effective and powerful online advertising systems work!

‘Want Fries With That?’ – Cross-Sell And Up-Sell Always!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andy Vining @ 8:43 pm

In uncertain trading times, when available cash to promote a business – regardless of size – gets tighter and tighter, one of the most effective ways to generate additional income remain the simple, but highly effective, methods of cross-selling and up-selling in store.

One of the most visible and recognisable examples of this is to be found within fast food restaurants - the masters of cross-selling and up-selling: you will all recognise the phrase ‘Want Fries With That?’

Fast food retailers such as McDonalds and Burger King, effectively use up-selling techniques to underpin their commercial success, stability and growth. It is hugely important to them – and should be to you also.

How is it done? Well, you (an already motivated customer) ask to buy a meal deal, made up from let’s say a small coke, burger and fries. This meal is in reality already reasonably priced and probably all you need, but you are immediately (at the point of sale) given the option to ‘upgrade’ to let’s say a large coke and fries.

You probably don’t need the upgrade, but it’s so attractively priced that a large percentage of the population just cannot resist the ‘bargain’ and immediately upgrade their purchase. Voila! An enhanced cashflow to the retailer and a satisfied customer. Remember - the cashier is trained to invite every customer to do this EVERY TIME a standard-sized meal is ordered.

These same fast food outlets also ask customers to choose additional items with a meal, such as another drink or an apple pie. This highly effective cross-selling has made corporate giants of these companies, creating literally millions of dollars worth of extra sales annually. Effective up-selling and cross-selling is critical.

“How is this relevant to my business?”, you ask? “How can it NOT be?” is a better question to ask – can you afford not to cross-sell and up-sell in your business?

Further evidence, conducted by Benchmark Portal Inc an incredible five years ago, suggested that when an up-sell and cross-sell opportunity exists within a call centre originated call, between 22 and 32 per cent of ALL callers accept the offer. The technique works whichever way you work it!

This success story can be replicated time and time again by you the high-street retailer.

Your sales staff have a built-in, one-to-one environment between themselves and the prospective customer. You can also lay out your store to make the up-sell process tantalising to any prospective customer.

Where do BluRoute come in? Well, we make the process even better by delivering the prospective customers to your store, armed with a Promotional Offer, fully intending to make that important first purchase.

It’s then up to you to work your magic further, by turning that simple sale – such as the fast food retailer’s basic meal package as an example – into a higher value sale.
