It’s Not Too Late To Change – Internet Sales Still Only Account For 4% Of Total Retail Sales.
BluRoute have uncovered some interesting snippets - which highlight why the use of online advertising is an essential tool for retailers: whether or not they are Internet/E-commerce enabled.
According to the British Retail Consortium:
- Eleven per cent of all businesses in the UK are categorised under the Retail sector.
- Retail sales in the UK last year amounted to nearly £250 billion – more than the combined economies of Switzerland and Ireland together.
- The Retail Sector alone generates nearly six per cent of the UK’s entire Gross Domestic product figure annually.
- One-third of consumer spending still passes directly through shops and, even with the growth in Internet sales, retail sales over the Internet still accounts for less than four per cent of total retail sales.
- The Retail Sector employed nearly three million people alone as of September 2005 – some eleven per cent of the entire UK workforce, with a growth of some 300,000 employees over the last five years.
So, although there are many reports, surveys and statistics indicating the slump of retail’s predominance in the UK, it should be noted that, with only four per cent of retail sales being concluded online, it is far too early for traditional retailers to concede in the battle between ‘bricks & mortar’ sales and ‘online’ sales.
What should be noted, however, are the changing ways in which consumers source their products and services. Those retailers who are not yet Internet-literate need to wise up quickly, as there are an ever-increasing number of consumers who automatically look to the Internet in their search for new products and services.
Let them use the Internet to identify what they want – but be prepared to capitalise on their decision once it has been made.
BluRoute are happy to see the increasing use of the Internet as it brings huge degrees of freedom and choice to the consumer, but we contend that Retailers can and should use the Internet as a tool to drive consumers to their stores.
Not all sales have to be concluded over the Internet. Bricks and mortar retailers have the huge advantage over Internet retailers of providing a human point of contact, a higher degree of service, and therefore, a higher degree of customer satisfaction.
